PSAT

In 10th and 11th grade, get ready for standardized testing with a practice exam. Stanford OHS students who would like to take the PSAT are responsible for finding a school in their local area to host them for the exam.

The PSAT

The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized test that can provide practice for the SAT. The scores from a student’s 11th-grade PSAT are also used as the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Limited scholarship funds are available.

The PSAT/NMSQT measures:

  •  Critical reading skills
  •  Math problem-solving skills
  •  Writing skills

The PSAT is scored on a scale of 0-1520, with individual section scores for Math and Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing.

PSAT scores are not sent to the colleges and do not factor in college admission decisions. Students will not be at a disadvantage if they choose not to or are otherwise unable to take the PSAT.

Finding a Test Site

Students should follow the guidelines provided by the College Board for homeschool students who are seeking an exam site. Many students have had success calling schools directly and asking to sit for the exam(s).

Visit College Board for guidelines about finding test sites.

Disability Accommodations

Students who need accommodations for AP exams should also follow the procedure for homeschool students. When seeking accommodations, students will work with the Stanford OHS Disability Specialist (ohsaccommodations@stanford.edu) who serves as the SSD coordinator for Stanford OHS.

Visit College Board for additional information about test site accommodations.
