Kristen Aldebol-Hazle

English Instructor

B.A., Duke University
Ph.D., University of California, Davis

Dr. Aldebol-Hazle (Dr. KLAH) always adored reading, so she surprised no one when she switched from pre-med to English in the middle of her undergraduate study at Duke University. Around the same time, she went abroad in Florence, Italy, where she discovered a love of medieval and Renaissance literature and art. She promptly declared a second major in Medieval and Renaissance Studies.

In graduate school, she focused on medieval literature but also explored how medieval literature reaches beyond the boundaries of its time period and connects to the past and the future. She completed her Ph.D. in English with a Designated emphasis in Classics and Classical Receptions with a dissertation that investigates how a case study of a religious allegory can shed light on literature as a control mechanism for the newly literate—and how readers disrupt that control.

In graduate school at UC Davis, she discovered the joys of teaching and taught courses ranging from surveys and introductory writing to monsters in literature and business writing. She taught for seven years at UC Davis and then five years at Clemson University. She took a break from teaching during the pandemic and focused on caring for her two young children and designing courses. She’s delighted to return to teaching with Stanford OHS!

For fun, she enjoys playing with her husband and kids, knitting, gardening, taking long walks, playing games, and, of course, reading!
