Joe Horton
Writing Instructor
Joe Horton is an instructor in the Writing & Tutoring Center and teaches labs that support writing classes. He has undergraduate degrees in theatre and film from the University of Southern California and is a graduate of the Zell M.F.A. writing program at the University of Michigan, where he won three Hopwood awards. He teaches writing at the University of California, Davis, and UC Berkeley, and was formerly interim director of the English Department Writing Program at the University of Michigan.
His recent fiction and nonfiction has appeared with Ploughshares, Hobart, PRISM international, Midwestern Gothic, the Colorado Review, and TIME magazine. His plays have been nominated for six Off West End Awards in London, including Best New Play. He has also worked as a journalist with the PBS NewsHour in Washington and in public relations with Ketchum Pleon in London.
He collaborated with the faculty and students of Dine' College on the Navajo Nation and has worked with many different writing organizations including InsideOut Literary Arts, 826michigan, Bright Futures, and the American Language Institute.
Joe enjoys traveling, writing, mourning the Oakland Athletics and wrangling his cats, and exploring the west with his wife and son.
