In this fast-paced intermediate level course students continue to rapidly acquire vocabulary essential for daily interaction, and sentence structures which enable them to understand and produce complex sentences, coherent narratives, brief comparisons, explain plans, and support a point of view. Students develop greater control over past, present, and future time frames. Class is conducted mostly in Chinese, with meaningful oral communication by and among students emphasized in every class period. Reading and culture studies are expanded to include traditional Chinese stories and poems. Students will be familiar with 800–1000 characters by the end of the second year.
