Chinese 1B is intended for middle school students who have completed Chinese 1A or who have some prior experience learning Chinese. Students continue learning foundational vocabulary and sentence structures that enable them to talk about common daily topics such as classes, homework and tests; routines at home and school; money, food, and shopping; and how to get around. Students speak frequently in class, developing confidence in their ability to communicate in Chinese. In the second semester, the class will read one or two short books together. Cultural topics such as holidays, Chinese food, and geography are woven in throughout the year. Students will have been introduced to about 500 characters by the end of Chinese 1B, and will be well-prepared to continue to Intermediate Chinese in high school.
