Topic for Spring 2024: Artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI) as a field pursues the creation of systems that think and act rationally, or at least think and act like humans. This pursuit has been represented in myriad works of science fiction as a thing of the future, but recent explosions in knowledge and technology are turning the futuristic fantasy into an imminent reality. This course will examine some of the fundamental features of and questions involved with AI, beginning with a brief history up to technological developments in the incipient human ability to create intelligent systems, followed by an investigation of several pressing philosophical questions AI raises, and the interdisciplinary implications of various answers to these questions for our species' identity, morality, and society.
